School IT has its own rhythm. Nothing can be down during a lesson or an exam, the lab must look the same every Sunday morning no matter what students did to it, and the big jobs have to fit into the holidays. We fix faults remotely between periods and plan the rest around the timetable.
Problems we fix in schools and training centres every week
- Lab PCs in a different state every lesson. Changed wallpapers, deleted shortcuts, games installed, settings that make the next class late. We set up every lab machine from one standard image with a reset at each restart, so the lab is always the way the teacher left it.
- Projector or smart board not showing the laptop. Wrong input, a dead cable in the ceiling, or a board that lost its driver. We fix the connection, label the cables and give teachers a one-page guide that works.
- Wi-Fi collapsing when a class connects. One access point for a floor cannot serve thirty tablets. We survey the building, place access points per classroom and separate student, staff and guest networks.
- Students reaching sites they should not. Filtering that was never set up or is easy to bypass. We put content filtering on the student network, with the staff network left open for teaching.
- System down on exam day. Online exams and the exam portal cannot wait for a callback. We check the lab and the network before exam week and put an engineer on standby for the morning.
- Learning platform slow on old PCs. A learning platform that needs more than a ten-year-old PC can give. We tell you honestly which machines can be upgraded with an SSD and more memory, and which should be replaced.
- Staff room printer and attendance system offline. The shared printer and the attendance or student information system that the office depends on. We keep them on a wired connection and a fixed address so they stay up.
What we set up and look after in a school
- Computer labs. Identical PCs from one image, a reset at every restart, student logins that cannot change settings, and the software the curriculum needs, licensed and updated in the holidays.
- Classroom displays. Projectors, smart boards and interactive screens, cabled and labelled, with wireless screen sharing where the room allows it.
- Wi-Fi per classroom. Access points sized for a full class, with student, staff and guest networks kept apart and content filtering on the student side.
- Teacher and admin devices. Teacher laptops, office PCs for admissions and accounts, the student information system and the shared printers they use.
- Servers and shared material. A small server or NAS for lesson material and backups, with a cloud copy of the admin data.
- Power and security. UPS units for the server and the lab switch, antivirus on every machine and CCTV on its own part of the network.
How fast we respond between lessons
An engineer replies within 5 minutes, and a lab PC that will not log in or a projector that will not connect is usually fixed remotely in about 15 minutes, before the next period starts.
Hardware faults get a same-day visit, worked around the timetable. Lab rebuilds, new PCs and cabling are planned for the holidays, and in exam weeks we keep an engineer available for the morning sessions.
Questions school administrators ask us
Can you reset the whole lab at the start of each term?
Yes. Every lab PC is built from one standard image, so a reset takes an hour, not a week. On a monthly plan, we do it in the holidays and check every machine before the first lesson.
Can students be stopped from reaching certain websites?
Yes. Content filtering on the student network blocks categories you choose, and the staff network stays open for teaching. We can also set time-based rules for exam periods.
Do you work during school holidays?
Yes. Holidays are when the big jobs happen: lab rebuilds, new PCs, cabling and Wi-Fi changes, so the term starts with everything working.
Can you supply thirty identical PCs for a new lab?
Yes. We recommend models within your budget, supply them, image them identically and install them in the lab with the software ready. Warranty claims are handled by us.
